Big-Island-Candies-Chocolate-Covered-Bars-Corn-Chip-Crunch01Even though Hawaii is the 13th best travel destination in the world according to “Traveleye.com” (which apparently has such an eye for travel that they ranked Orlando, Florida number on the list), I’ve never been there, partly due to the fact that I am a shut-in whose alabaster skin crisps like bacon at even the faintest hint of sunlight. Nevertheless, as a food adventurer, I’m always looking to broaden my culinary horizons and venture across the Pacific to my neighbors in the west.

I started where any typical American tourist would go: The FAQ page of the Hawaii Tourism Authority website. Read the rest of this entry »

Chocolate now falls into the category of “things that people can be snobs about” (joining including beer, wine and Terrence Malick films). While some might enjoy a fine aged 2010 Indonesian truffle-caviar infused truffle, I admit to “indulging” with a block of unsweetened baking chocolate or an unusually waxy Palmer chocolate peanut balls around Halloween and/or Easter. Different strokes for different folks, right?

On the heels of the recently vague news that “chocolate is healthy“, most likely more people have been justifying their chocoholism with a daily dose of Hershey’s or Nestle’s. No joke, as I was typing this, the radio announced another study regarding women eating chocolate and reducing stroke. But telling women to eat chocolate feels like telling them to read Twilight. Today we go to the source of everyone’s favorite addiction. Read the rest of this entry »

Brown & Haley Factory Outlet in Fife

If you’re a Washington State South Sound resident, I’m sure you’re probably aware of Brown & Haley. You’ve probably sampled some of their products, ranging from good ol’ toothcracking Almond Roca to blob-like Mountain Bars and seen their plant peeking out from underneath I-705. While I’ve been to the outlet store located right at the factory a handful of times (and picked up things like tasty Milk Toffee Roca Buttercrunch Thins) this time I ventured out to Fife, just a few miles down the highway where Brown & Haley just opened a new warehouse outlet in August (and where the headquarters is also now based).

I was pied piper by a highway billboard noting that the outlet was somewhere on 20th Street. Headlined by a giant ALMOND ROCA sign, it’s on the same road that features several warehouses and car dealerships. My GPS couldn’t find it so I cruised down the road (subsequently avoiding 4pm rush hour traffic going south). Trying to avoid dropping by for no reason at all and most likely purchasing 30 lbs. of Almond Roca for myself to eat alone in the apartment, I remembered that it was a relative’s birthday coming up. Yes! I had a valid reason to be at a discount candy store with $5 burning a hole in my pocket. Read the rest of this entry »

Betty Crocker Warm Delights Minis

While I love pre-portioned, restrictively sized desserts as much as the next weight obsessed young woman, I had my doubts when I first saw this product. Even though I’ve never tried the “regular” size of Betty Crocker’s Warm Delights (aka adult version of an Easy Bake oven treat), these were really cheap. However, I was hesitant about the actual quality of a microwavable brownie (due to good measure – I’m looking at you nasty internet MUG BROWNIE recipe).

(FYI: I referenced this product in our previous review about a product called “True Delights” so forgive me if I use the names interchangeably since they’re so similar.) Read the rest of this entry »

I am blessed (or in regard to my waistline, cursed) to be located about fifteen minutes away from Brown & Haley Candy Company, maker of this product, Almond Roca, Mountain Bars and a variety of other confections they make. Keep in mind, where there’s a candy factory, there’s thousands of pieces of candy that don’t quite measure up to quality assurances tests (either misshaped, miswrapped and what have you). Enter the Brown & Haley Outlet store.

We picked up a box of Roca Thins for 99 cents at the store, which is located right outside the factory. They have a variety of deeply discounted goods like: 2 lbs of the seasonal Candy Cane Roca for 99 cents, Cappuccino and Mint (respectively) Mountain Bars for 10 cents or a bag of Macadamia Roca for 50 cents. My arteries are groaning, but my wallet is happy. Read the rest of this entry »
